KARNAL, Haryana, India—After a lapse of four years, the court has announced 10 years imprisonment to Bhai Bakhshish Singh (Baba), Swarn Singh and Mohinder Singh under Section 3 of the Explosive Act for attempting to assassinate the controversial Sirsa Dera Chief for blasphemy.  In addition, Gurinder Singh, Hoshiar Singh, Dharminder Singh and Jaswant Singh were sentenced to five years imprisonment.  The sentence was announced by Additional and Sessions Judge Ravi Kumar.

Bibi Parveen Kaur, another person arrested initially was acquitted of all charges due to a lack of evidence.  Bibi Parveen Kaur, aged 19 at the time of her arrest, hails from the family of Bhai Lachhman Singh Babbar, previously known as Bashir Mohammed.  Bhai Lachhman Singh was a convert from Islam, initially an Indian Government informant and Punjab Police cop who became a Sikh after coming into contact with Gursikhs post-1984.  Interestingly, Swarn Singh, another young fursikh who was arrested in this plot comes from a non-Sikh family.

Four years ago, Gurmeet Ram Rahim of Sacha Sauda was attacked near Karnal when his cavalcade was traveling on the GT Road.  Ram Rahim escaped the attack unhurt as the targeted vehicle was missed during the explosion.

It is believed that the Government of Punjab, formed jointly by Shiromani Akali Dal (B) and Bhartiya Janta Party conspired to round up innocent Gursikhs to win the votes of Sacha Sauda cultists.  Bibi Parveen Kaur’s case exposes such policies of the Punjab Government.  She was arrested due to a decades old grudge that the Government had with her uncle, Bhai Lachhman Singh Babbar.  Shortly after the blast in 2008, the Punjab Police tried to frame Bhai Bakshish Singh and others in another explosives case but the court rejected the fabricated findings of the Punjab Police.

Gurmeet Ram Rahim and his Sacha Sauda controversial cult has been in the limelight for the past several years.  The notorious dera chief stirred a major controversy when he parodied Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s attire and plume and carried out a “baptism” ceremony for his cultists.  The ceremony was very similar in nature to the Sikh baptism.

In addition to hurting the sentiments of the Sikhs, Ram Rahim is undergoing trial in various criminal cases—including for murder and rape.  Following the insulting incident by the cult leader, Sikhs have not received any justice from the Indian Government.  After the blasphemous ceremony, the Dera Cultists shot down a Sikh youth named Kamaljit Singh in cold blood.  Despite several witnesses that saw the killing of Kamaljit Singh, no arrests were made.
