GURDASPUR, Punjab—Despite four months having passed, there seems to be no justice for the murder of Shaheed Bhai Jaspal Singh who was killed by Punjab Police officers. Bhai Jaspal Singh of Sidhwan (Gurdaspur), age 18, was shot dead by Punjab Police during a peaceful protest to oppose the hanging of Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana.
The Punjab Government has announced compensation of Rs. 5 lakh (less than $10,000 US) to the family of Bhai Jaspal Singh, however the officers responsible for shooting him remain free despite credible evidence that proves that Bhai Jaspal Singh was protesting peacefully and the bullet was fired by a Punjab Police officer.
The lack of justice in this case has left everyone perplexed as the Government is shying away from this case. The growing sentiment is that there is no doubt that complicit Punjab Police officers are being shielded by the Government and Police administration.
In a press note released by the World Sikh Mission (Bhatoa), S. Simranjit Singh Mann stated that the Sikh Nation will not tolerate efforts by Shiromani Akali Dal (B) and Bhartiya Janta Party to save the police officer who shot and killed Bhai Jaspal Singh. He said that if murderers of Sikhs are not brought to justice, Sikhs will have to resort to other means of protest. He said that Punjab Government of SAD-BJP will be directly responsible for the outcome.
This is absolutely shocking! To hear that a human being is not given justice by the law for his horrific murder is just shocking. The officers that shot this soul should be sent to jail immediately. The Punjab Government is being very lazy about this situation. For how long will we have to suffer this injustice of our fellow people. We as human beings should be able to know that justice will be served! These political groups is ruining our country’s reputation. We are not the greatest democracy of the world if we cannot give this man his justice. We need to put his soul at peace so please Punjab Government, do yourselves a kind deed and put the police officer in jail already!
