Facebook Users: Gurdwara Bangla Sahib An Important “Social Landmark”

NEW DELHI—Social media giant, Facebook, recently published a list of 25 cities which were amongst the most “checked in” by its visitors.  Interestingly, Gurdwara Bangla Sahib has come in the list and is the only place from India that has been able to make its mark on the list.

Facebook’s check-in feature allows you to share with others places you have visited or you plan to visit.  Users can add location to their status updates to share with others.  The has concept has quickly become popular and has been used over 50 million times around the globe just this past year.

Gurdwara Bangla Sahib is one of the most important of the Sikh Gurdwaras in Delhi.  Guru Harkrishan Sahib Ji, the eight Sikh Guru, resided here during a visit to the Delhi in year 1664.  At that time, it was a bungalow (bangla) of Raja Jai Singh.  It was at this place where Guru Harkrishan Sahib helped cure the widespread disease of smallpox.  Guru Ji distributed aid and fresh water from a well built at this location.  Now the well at this Gurdwara is revered by Sikhs and non-Sikhs alike for its healing powers.

As mentioned by Facebook, Gurdwara Bangla Sahib is an important “social landmark”, however to the Sikhs; it’s one of the most important landmarks of their history as it reminds them of the fact that the Guru gave his life to end suffering of humanity.  The Guru, without judging the caste and creed, helped cure the life threatening disease of all.
