Call to Support Sikh Youth Committee of Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara, Surrey Delta

—There are two weeks remaining in the membership enrollment period at Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada. Elections will be held this fall but only members of the Gurdwara Sahib are entitled to vote. The outcome of the election will be largely decided during the membership enrollment period. The so-called “Moderate” slate has actively been contesting this year’s elections with a robust presence during the membership enrollment periods at the Gurdwara Sahib. Balwant Gill, the excommunicated Sikh, who was the President of the Gurdwara Sahib from 1997 to 2009 has been actively plotting a return of the “Moderate” slate to the Gurdwara Sahib.

Paradoxically, it has been because of the success of the current Sikh Youth committee that they have been struggling with large-scale apathy amongst Panthik Gursikhs in the Surrey area who are not aware that this year’s elections are being contested. The current committee has implemented weekly large-scale youth darbars, a Gurmat school, regular Amrit Sanchaars, camps during winter break, spring break and summer break, a weekly television show amongst dozens of other notable achievements. The return of the “Moderate” slate to the Gurdwara Sahib would put an immediate end to all of these programs and would be a devastating loss to the Sikh community in British Columbia.

Residents of Surrey, Delta and White Rock are eligible to become members of the Gurdwara Sahib. Membership enrollment is taking place at the Gurdwara Sahib until the end of the month at the following times: Wednesday from 5:30pm to 8:30pm, Friday from 5:30pm to 8:30pm, Sunday from 10:00am to 2:00pm and Sunday from 5:30pm to 8:30pm. Those who were members of the Gurdwara Sahib back in 2009 during the last election must become members again in order to vote in an election expected to happen this November.
