Toronto, Ontario— Jagmeet Singh, the first Member of Provincial Parliament to wear the turban in the Assembly at Queen’s Park, sponsored a successful motion at the NDP convention in Hamilton over the weekend which commit the party to protecting the rights of all Sikhs to display articles of faith in public.

The motion was proposed by Singh’s Bramalea-Gore-Malton riding association.

“Following my election as the NDP’s first MPP in this province from the Sikh community and first turbaned-Sikh elected in the Ontario Legislative Assembly I am very proud to see our party make a significant commitment to achieving the legal protections that Sikhs need to express their religious and cultural beliefs,” the first-term MPP said in a press release.

“The timing of this motion is particularly poignant as it comes on the anniversary of the formalization of the Sikh articles of faith April 13, 1699. I am very proud to mark this occasion with this very important step for Sikhs in Ontario.”

At the convention, Singh also appeared with musician and activist K’naan (Waving Flag) to discuss how to get more young people involved in politics.

“It was fantastic opportunity for many youth groups and community leaders from the Sikh community to show their enthusiasm and energy for helping to make Ontario a better place for their families and neighbours,” said Singh.
