No Justice for Pak Sikh Shot at Nankana Sahib

—Mahinder Singh, was shot and injured by unknown people in Nankana Sahib on 7 March 2012, died after one month in the hospital. The father of three was seriously injured in the shooting by unidentified people just over a month ago. His subsequent medical treatment cost 2.2 million Pakistani rupees (US$24,250), but Mahinder Singh ultimately succumbed to his injuries.

Mahinder Singh and his father, along with three brothers, had moved to Nankana Sahib from Orakzai Agency in 2006.  He ran his own business in Nankana Sahib, supporting his family.

After his death, hundreds of his relatives staged a demonstration and blocked Sheikhupura-Faisalabad Road as a protest against the police.

They also staged a demonstration outside Gurdwara Janamasthan. Speaking with journalists, Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee former presidents Sardar Mistan Singh, Sardar Bisham Singh, Dayal Singh, Nadan Singh and Ujagar Singh said that it was sheer negligence by the district police that could not arrest the accused even after one month. They said that they would protest outside the Punjab Assembly if the killers were not arrested in four days. Later, they performed the last rituals for the deceased.

Mahinder Singh’s father said the government also did an injustice to his son when police took  the body into their custody and when they returned back the body to them, they took out the kidneys and heart from his body.

According to local sangat, after this incident, two other Sikhs were kidnapped in Nankana Sahib and then released, one was seriously injured.
