Shaheed Jaspal Singh’s Photo to be Placed at the Central Sikh Museum

LUDHIANA, Punjab—The executive committee of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) in a meeting at Gurdwara Degsar Sahib, Katana, Ludhiana, today decided to put the photo of sikh martyr Jaspal Singh in the Central Sikh Museum at Sri Darbar Sahib.  Jaspal [Singh] was martyred during [unprovoked shooting] by police in Gurdaspur on March 29 during a peaceful protest regarding the hanging of Beant “Singh” assassin Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana.

The SGPC executive committee has also decided to honour centenarian marathon runner Fauja Singh for bringing glory to [the] Sikh community.

It also decided to provide financial aid of Rs 2 lakh to the family of Sukhchain Singh, the granthi at Darbar Sahib Tarn Taran who was shot dead recently after he tried to stop two thieves from committing a bike theft. It also announced a job for one family member of Sukhchain Singh on the basis of educational qualification.

In another major decision today, the committee also decided to constitute a sub-committee for the cleaning of gold and silver at the Golden Temple Toshakhana.

To give an impetus to education in rural areas, the committee decided to open 10 colleges and 11 schools in rural areas. SGPC president Avtar Makkar said the schools and colleges would lay a special focus on religious education, besides imparting the regular education to students.

The committee also decided to honour Alag Shabad Yog International Charitable Trust (Ludhiana) chairman Saroop Singh Alag to spread the message of Guru Granth Sahib.

It also decided that the maximum tenure of a SGPC official appointed as manager or accountant of any Gurdwara under SGPC would not be more than three years.

The committee also announced 6 percent dearness allowance and a special increment for every SGPC employee.

It was also decided to demolish Sri Guru Nanak Girls Senior Secondary School, Amritsar, to pave the way to construct a serai for devotees. Makkar said the expenses for setting up new building of the school in question would be borne by Baba Kashmir Singh Bhuriwale.

On March 30, the Supreme Court had directed the SGPC executive committee constituted in 2010 to run the affairs of apex body of Sikhs [until the] court delivered verdict in a case where SGPC challenged the Punjab and Haryana High Court verdict which restored the voting rights of sehajdhari sikhs in SGPC polls, thereby putting a question mark on the newly-constituted house of SGPC that came into being after the September 2011 SGPC elections.
