VIP Treatment, Not Judicial Remand for Daughter Killer

CHANDIGARH, Punjab—Former SGPC President Jagir Kaur has been sentenced to five years imprisonment for forcing her daughter to abort her pregnancy.

In April 2000, Bibi Jagir Kaur allegedly abducted her daughter Harpreet Kaur and forced her to have an abortion—later murdering her for having a pre-marital relationship.  Ever since her involvement in Harpreet’s murder, Jagir Kaur’s reputation has been greatly tainted and Panthik bodies have continued to question her political career.  In contrast, she has received wide support from Parkash Badal, current Chief Minister of Punjab.

Although strong evidence suggests her involvement in the murder of her daughter, Jagir was acquitted from that case and only sentenced for the abduction and forceful abortion of her daughter’s fetus.  According to the Shiromani Akali Dal (PP), Parkash Badal had used his influence to get the murder case cancelled against her.  Panch Pardhani representatives advised concerned parties to approach a higher court to seek justice.

Although after her arrest, Jagir Kaur has resigned from her post as a minister, she has continued to receive VIP status while lodged in jail.  She has been given a VIP room where she can hold meetings with her admirers.  Just in the past few days, various politicians have visited her.  Pictures of police officers bowing to seek Jagir’s blessings have been posted online.

It is believed that Bibi Jagir Kaur will get bail soon, even before her 14 day judicial remand is over.  This will be a big blow to the opposition that fought hard to seek justice.  Already, the court and police staff from Patiala hold support for the bibi, even allowing her to move her judicial remand to Kapurthala, where she enjoys greater influence over people.  She was taken to Patiala jail and from there to Kapurthala in an air conditioned luxury van.
