:dateline:A weekend fire at an old Sikh temple in Surrey is believed to be arson.

Surrey RCMP said this appears to be a random act and, in spite of the target being a religious building, it seems to be more a crime of opportunity.

The fire, in 14200-block of 88th Avenue, was in an old temple building currently used for storage. The 911 call came in at about 3:30 a.m. early Sunday morning.Police say the fire was started in the interior and it later spread.

Witnesses told police three youth were seen fleeing the area, one of whom had a red Jerry can. They are described as about 16 years old, one of whom had a scooter.

One suspect was wearing a red hoodie and the other two were in dark-coloured clothing.

Police have two persons of interest in the case–a 17-year-old and an 18-year-old who are providing minimal co-operation. The Surrey RCMP said they are still trying to determine the exact number of people involved and who actually started the fire.

Anyone who saw the youths or knows who they are is asked to call the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502.
