AMRITSAR SAHIB—This past week, several top notch politicians from Punjab have come under scrutiny for trying to bribe voters in the upcoming elections. Sadly, even “Sikh” politicians have been blamed for distributing alcohol illegally to buy votes. This past Friday, Bibi Jagir Kaur, ex-SGPC President currently contesting elections as a Shiromani Akali Dal candidate, was booked for distributing alcohol in Kapurthala.
Punjab Police seized a vehicle loaded with over 180 cases of liquor which were going to be distributed in Kapurthala by Jagir and her associates. Jagir is facing humiliation and anger from Panthik bodies throughout the State for adopting such cheap tactics to lure voters.
Bibi Jagir Kaur is just one person amongst a long list of politicians who have been sighted distributing alcohol. Along with the SAD, many BJP politicians have been found guilty of misdeeds. MLA Anil Joshi, and member of the BJP, has also been booked for distributing alcohol in large quantities across the holy city of Amritsar Sahib. Punjab Police seized over 3,500 bottles of liquor from a vehicle belonging to Joshi.
As usual, who wins in the upcoming elections depends not on the best candidate, but the one who is able to lure the people of Punjab with alcohol. The weeks before the elections are very important to the candidates and the people of Punjab, as there is an ample supply of alcohol that is passed out in exchange for votes.
Such a state of affairs for elections is miserable and demonstrates how low the value of human rights in Punjab is where people sell their voting rights for a mere bottle of alcohol. It is not just the fact that votes are exchanged for alcohol that is depressing. The fact that the entire state of Punjab is drowning in the flood of drugs and alcohol is more worrying. The politicians who should be helping our motherland are instead helping this disease reach each and every household in Punjab.
If politicians are using measures such as alcohol to bribe voters, who knows what the future has in store for Punjab. Punjab being the land of the Sikh Gurus has forgotten the teachings of the Gurus and Bhagats. The Sikh leadership seems to have no concerns whatsoever about such events which are taking place all over Punjab.
