#iPledgeOrange Awareness Week Held by BC Sikh Youth

Vancouver—Sikh Youth attending the University of British Columbia held an awareness week in support of Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana.  For the entire week, students gave out leaflets and distributed other material to raise awareness of abuse of human rights in India.  The main motive of the “Sikh Awareness Week” was to seek an end to the death penalty in India.  A similar program was also organized at  Simon Fraser University, also in British Columbia.

In the past several weeks, similar programs have been organized at many other universities around the globe, and at other places, including Gurdwaras.  Sikh Youth have shown a keen interest in the case of Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana, who is currently being held in Patiala jail facing the death penalty.  Bhai Rajoana’s execution was set to take place on March 31, but due to immense pressure from Sikhs living in Punjab and worldwide, the President of India issued a “stay” on the execution.
