Following the incident of burning the holy Saroop of Sri Guru Granth Sahib in Gurdwara of Jodhpur village near Tarn Taran materialized by followers of Noormehal based anti-Sikh cult named ‘Divya Jyoti Jagrti Sansthan’ (DJJS), the question arises whether Sri Akal Takht Sahib and Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) would get the bases of the cult sealed? Or Sikh sangat will have to be satisfied only with the police action against the accused? The Akal Takht Sahib and SGPC have failed to get the bases of the cult sealed so far.

DJJS was led by self-styled godman Ashotosh Jha who died a few months ago, but management of the cult denies his death, claiming that he is in state of deep meditation and will wake up from the meditation one day. However, Punjab and Haryana high Court has directed the Punjab government to ensure the cremation of the dead body of Ashutosh within 15 days.

The direct conflict of Sikh organizations with Noormehal cult started on July 31, 2002 when Panthik organizations including Dal Khalsa, Sikh Students Federation (Mehta), Khalra Mission Committee and Shiromani Khalsa Panchayat tried to restrain the function of the cult at Malaut (District Mukatsar). Fifteen Sikhs were injured in a clash that erupted at that time.

On August 2, 2002, Panj Singh Sahiban (highest presidium of Sikhs) met at Sri Akal Takht Sahib led by the Jathedar Giani Joginder Singh Vedanti, and they strongly condemned the attack of the Noormehal cult and sought rigid action against it from the side of government. They also ordered to examine the literature, audio and video cassettes of the cult. National Commission for Minority Affairs of India wrote a letter to Punjab government on August 27, 2002 to seal the bases of the cult in Punjab.

Submitting the report to Sri Akal Takht Sahib on September 6, 2002, the investigation panel of Sikh scholars found the material of the cult to be anti-Sikhs.

On 5 September, 2002, Sri Akal Takht Sahib called a meeting of all religious and political organizations of Sikhs in Teja Singh Samundari Hall during which 101 members committee was constituted with the responsibility to root out the Noormehal cult in Punjab. On December 22, 2002, considering the complaints received at Sri Akal Takht Sahib against the cult, Panj Singh Sahiban gave the ultimatum of one month for the government to take action against the cult.

However, no action has been taken against the cult even after the passage of 12 years.

Till 2007, SGPC and Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) has cited that the Congress government accommodates the cult. But When SAD (B) came into power in 2007, police opened fire towards the Sikhs who were opposing the function of the cult at Ludhiana and shot dead one Sikh named Darshan Singh Lohara.

In the period of 12 years, many other incidents have taken place in which cultists attacked Sikhs. Just 15 days ago, in Jodhpur village near Tarn Taran, Sikhs opposed the function of the cult but the cultists attacked them leaving dozen of Sikhs injured seriously. The injured Sikhs included Bhai Amrik Singh Ajnala and Bhai Tarlochan Singh of Guru Granth Singh Satkar Sabha.

Just after 15 days, the holy Saroop of Guru Granth Sahib was burnt by cultists. Police have claimed to have arrested 4 accused. In Bhog ceremony held for burnt Saroop of Guru Granth Sahib, SGPC and Akal Takht Sahib appointed jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh agreed with the demand of Sikhs that the bases of the cult must be sealed. Besides, both the institutions have given the ultimatum to police to arrest the all culprits by Dec 12.

The other side of the picture is that, other SAD (B) leaders of Tarn Taran district Virsa Singh Valtoha, Harmeet Singh Sandhu and Adesh Partap Singh Kairon did not attended the Bhog ceremony. As per information, the serious allegations of participating function of the cult have been leveled against Valtoha.

In view of this, the question remains answered as to whether Sikh organizations, SGPC and Sri Akal Takht Sahib would succeeded to ensure the sealing of all bases of the cult in Punjab. It is a matter of grave concern among Sikhs.

  1. Religious faith is personal, why we quirl with each other .Adopt the phenomena of Western community to follow their religion. And the police should do their own work

  2. What Mughals, British, Indian Govt. couldn’t do it in 5 centuries i.e destroy Sikhi, Prakaswa Badal Bhaiya has done in last 10 years.

  3. It appears that the present Punjab Govt. and the Chief Minister could be the cause of all the trouble for the Sikhs.
RSS & BJP are their partners.
The SGPC and its Members and leaders are under the influence of
the Chief Minisrer. They seem to be double faced.
The SIKHS can not expect any JUSTIC from Police or above Govt.

    • Sir, with due respect, let us see the whole story with different prospective. Starting from narakdhaari to indra and now noormehal… can we calculate, how much loss of men, women, children and property is accrued upon us. Maybe silly but question is question. Instead being and keeping strong value of our religion and beliefs.interference in others religion and belief, it does need rethinking of our own values and strength. People look for somewhere else if they aren’t getting what they want from own system. Being serious towards our own Charhdi kala, we take a short cut. Selfish and greedy power hungry culprit then find it an opportunity and spread hatred among humans and destroy humanity just for his own sake. In Sikhs I have not seen a single leader, preacher and philosopher who honestly preaches human respect instead they target other humans directly. It’s serious and shameful too
