Bhai Daljit Singh Bittu And 4 Others Acquitted As Punjab Police Fails To Produce Witnesses

LUDHIANA, Punjab—Bhai Daljit Singh Bittu, Advocate Jaspal Singh Manjhpur, Bhai Balbir Singh Bira (Bhootna), Bhai Palwinder Singh Shatrana, and Bhai Gurdeep Singh Raju have been acquitted in the court of justice of Sh. Sukhdev Singh (Additional Sessions Judge Ludhiana), in case FIR No.131, dated 27-08-2009, under Sections 13, 15, 17, 18, 18B of Unlawful Activities Act, Police Station Sarabha Nagar Ludhiana.

Although 5 have been acquitted from all cases, Bhai Daljit Singh Bittu and Balbir Singh Bira still have one remaining case pending.

It was alleged by the police and authorities that these five Singhs were seeking to create disturbance to peace in the State of Punjab, and other areas of India.  They were also charged for transferring large sums of money.  In order to justify the case, the police had produced a list of 55 witnesses, but in the last 5 years, only 24 actually testified, and even after many extensions of given time by the presiding judge, the Punjab Police could not produce the remaining 31 witnesses.

On February 20th 2014, the court ordered that if the police could not produce any more evidence and witnesses, the file must be closed, and thus the case was put on decision. In the defense, Bhai Daljit Singh Bittu, and others have argued that they have produced evidence that these 43 alleged accounts were members of the Lawyer Association, members of the Press Media and also members of the Shiromani Akali Dal Panch Pardhani Political Wing.
