NEW DELHI—Despite the Sikh Nation turning its attention to the case of Sajjan Kumar’s unjust acquittal, efforts continued to save Prof. Davinderpal Singh Bhullar this past week. Primarily, Bibi Navneet Kaur, wife of Prof. Bhullar continued her fight to seek justice for her husband.
Supreme Court Rejects Recent PIL
A PIL was filed in Supreme Court by her requesting for a stay in the execution of Prof. Bhullar. The PIL was filed against Supreme Court’s decision of April 12th, in which Prof. Bhullar’s mercy plea had been rejected. Hopes of Bibi Navneet Kaur were however squashed as Supreme refused to stay the execution order. Despite the efforts of Parkash Badal and his son, Senior Advocate Ram Jethmalani shared that “arrangements are being made to hang Bhullar like Ajmal Kasab and Afzal Guru.” Jethmalani had presented the petition by Bibi Navneet Kaur to the Chief Justice of India.
Germany Seeks Clemency for Prof. Bhullar
German President Joachim Gauck and Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle have sent a correspondence to the Indian Government seeking clemency for Prof. Bhullar. German Ambassador to India, Michael Steiner said, “As a matter of principle, Germany opposes capital punishment as it does not serve the cause of justice.”
It is not known if the request by German officials will be able to save Prof. Bhullar from the gallows as this is not the first time they have appealed to the Indian Government in this regard. In 2011, Germany had requested India to send back Prof. Bhullar.
