Gurbani Word Of The Day: aṁmrit

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ (aṁmrit)

Meaning: noun: Milk.

Quote:

pasoo milahi chaňgiaaeeaa   khaṛ khaavahi aṁmrit dehi.
All praise to animals, they eat grass and provide sweet milk. -Guru Nanak Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 489

Message: Just like humans, animals are also part of the creation. However, they provide valuable things. For example, some animals graze on pasture, subsist on grass and give us milk, providing dairy products which are so vital for our well-being and enjoyment.

What do we humans provide? We consume so much of the earth’s resources. We take everything from the world, but what do we give in return?

Being self-centred, we commit misdeeds and inflict pain on others. In spiritual terms, human life is useless if what we do does not benefit anyone. It is of little worth if it lacks gratitude and appreciation for the One who always cherishes and provides for us.

Etymology: From Sanskrit aṁmrit (immortal; nectar), which is comparable to the Greek ambrosia. Here, however, it is used to mean milk, considered to be ‘sweet and delicious’ as nectar.
