Badal legally bound to furnish information before Commission of Inquiry, says Justice Ranjit Singh

CHANDIGARH, Punjab—Terming the former Punjab Chief Minister Prakash Badal’s stand of rejecting Investigation Commission as illegal and invalid, the Justice Ranjit Singh led Investigation Commission has said that Badal is legally bound to furnish information sought from him by the Commission. He has said that Badal’s stand is neither legal nor valid in any manner.

Justice Ranjit Singh has also turned down Badal’s prayer for withdrawing the notice issued to him for coming out with information. In his order, Justice Ranjit Singh asserted that a notice was sent to Badal as he was in a position to furnish relevant information to the commission being the CM then.

“If the discretion is left to an individual, the Commission of Inquiry Act would be rendered redundant,” Justice Ranjit Singh ruled. Referring to the provisions of the Act, Justice Ranjit Singh observed that any person required by the commission to furnish information was deemed to be legally bound to do it.

It may be recalled here that the former Punjab CM Parkash Badal had earlier refused to appear before Justice Ranjit Singh Investigation Commission by saying that his party annuls the Investigation Commission appointed by Captain Amarinder Singh.

It is pertinent to note here that the Justice Ranjit Singh led Investigation Commission had earlier exposed the involvement of Badal in ordering Police firing over peacefully protesting Sikhs at Behbal Klan. Shaheed Bhai Krishan Bhagwan Singh and Shaheed Bhai Gurjit Singh Nikke Sarawan had attained martyrdom in this unprovoked Police firing while several others were left seriously injured.
