Row over ‘Nanak Shah Fakir’: Supreme Court fixes May 8 for further hearing

NEW DELHI—The Supreme Court of India on April 16 decided to uphold its earlier verdict endorsing screening of the controversial movie ‘Nanak Shah Fakir’. The move came in response to a review petition moved by the SGPC seeking ban on ‘Nanak Shah Fakir’.

However, the Supreme Court bench headed by Justice Dipak Misra has fixed May 8 for conducting further hearing on this case. The bench said the fundamental issue was to see whether the life of Guru Nanak had been portrayed in the right manner or not.

Appearing for the SGPC, senior advocate PS Patwalia told the three-judge bench that the movie was against a 2003 resolution passed by the SGPC that no living human being would ever portray the gurus. “This movie shows Guru Nanak with his father, mother. He later marries…,” he charged.

Appearing for the producer Harinder Sikka, senior advocate Rupinder Singh Suri said that an SGPC sub-committee had suggested the changes and these were carried out. “Whatever can be done, we have,” he said, blaming an “afterthought” by the SGPC for its about-turn.

  1. People don’t know about our religion because our leaders and preachers have failed to pass religion to the rest of the world. Even now a high ranking British diplomat Simon McDonald has called Golden Temple, Sri Harimandir Sahib a mosque. If a diplomat doesn’t know who Sikhs are then what chance has a average person. We are called Paki’s in the western world. I urge more FILMS and documentary’s to be made.

  2. It is a Sikh religion issue and it should be decided by Sikhs only. It is stupid to give authority of our religion to a Supreme Court which knows nothing about our religion.

  3. My Cousin Sister embraced Sikhi after seeing Nanak Shah Fakir in 2015, 3 months latter! We must show all world this Film the 2015 version. Punjabi been brainwashed by the British Raj to attack anyone who promotes Sikhi to NonSikhs. j
