Some people aspire to play the game of polo but hold on to the saddle handles while mounting the horse. -Guru Arjan Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 322

Message: Can you play a game of polo if you don’t even know how to ride a horse? Or all you do is: mount the horse and grab the saddle lest you fall down?

The Guru says if you want to do something in life, you won’t be able to do it until you consciously learn the qualities and skills you need for it. You have to put your heart and mind into learning and then implement what you have learnt by performing right actions and deeds. Only then can you achieve your goals, temporal as well as spiritual.

Notes: Polo is a game played by teams on horseback, with players using long-handled mallets to drive a wooden ball into a goal. It originated in the east though now it is more popular in the west. Some historians state that Akbar, the Mughal emperor, was fond of playing it.

Etymology: From Sanskrit khuṇṭ(peg, post) → Prakrit khuṁṭ (peg, post; pole) → Lahndi khooḍee (stick).
