Pakistani leaders ask Sikh couples to organize their marriages in Pakistan

LAHORE, Western Punjab, Pakistan—Following the passing of ‘Punjab Sikhs Anand Karaj Marriages Act 2017’ by the western Punjab assembly, the provincial minister Sardar Ramesh Singh Arora has given an open invitation to the worldwide Sikh community get tied in wedding knot in Pakistan. He has said that the Western Punjab government will issue them a marriage deed legitimating the union of couple as per Sikh customs.

He has specially appealed the India resident Sikhs to arrange their marriages in Pakistan if their respective state governments are not recognizing their marriages as per Sikh Anand Marriage Act.

S. Tara Singh, the president of Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhik Committee, has said that the Pakistani Sikh couples were facing several problems due to non-recognition their marriages but now with the passing of bill, these problems will be sorted out.

It may be recalled here that the Western Punjab’s assembly had unanimously passed the ‘Punjab Sikhs Anand Karaj Marriages Act 2017’ on March 14 to legally recognize Sikh marriages in Punjab province of Pakistan. The bill will come into force after getting approved by the provincial governor. Every Sikh marriage, that took place before the bill, will also gain legal status once the bill comes into force.

According to the bill, a marriage ceremony, or Anand Karaj — which is defined as “the lawful union of a Sikh male and Sikh female” — will be performed in accordance with the religious practices as per Sikh tenets. A “marriage deed”, a legal document authorizing the matrimonial union, will then be issued by a registrar who will be appointed by the Punjab government.
