AMRITSAR SAHIB, Punjab—Expressing deep grief over addressing of life sentence till death to political Sikh prisoner Bhai Jagtar Singh Tara, SGPC’s Chief Secretary Dr. Roop Singh has termed the development as unfortunate and sorrowful for Sikhs. He has said that Bhai Tara and his aides did not assassinate Chief Minister Beant “Singh” due to any personal grudge or enmity. “These activists were emotional for a reason that everybody knows,” he said. He added that Bhai Tara should not have been treated this way by the Indian justice system.
Interacting with media on March 17, Dr. Roop Singh said that this punishment is sorrowful for Sikhs, as those who massacred the innocent Sikh in Delhi and other parts of the country in 1984, are still at large. “There has been no hearing of Sikhs seeking justice, for decades. This makes us realise that they are citizens of second class in India,” he added.
Damdami Taksal chief Baba Harnam Singh Dhumma has also termed the punishment addressed to Bhai Tara as unfair and has sought his immediate release from jail. He has said that Bhai Tara had solid reason to assassinate the former Punjab Chief Minister Beant “Singh” as there was a grave human rights violation against Sikh youths in Punjab during his tenure.Sikh24 Editors can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org
