SGPC To Ban Plastic Bags Starting April at Darbar Sahib

AMRITSAR SAHIB, Punjab—The apex Sikh body Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhik Committee on March 15 announced to impose ban on the use of plastic bags for carrying Karah Prasad inside the holiest Sikh shrine Sri Harmandir Sahib from April 1. As per an estimate, plastic bags weighing to 26.5 ton were being used annually.

Sharing the development in a press conference March 15, SGPC’s Chief Secretary Dr. Roop Singh informed that the SGPC will replace the use of plastic bags with the one made up of corn and potatoes. He further informed that the SGPC has taken the initiative in response to the campaign launched by the Punjab Pollution Control Board.

Dr. Roop Singh further informed that the move has been given nod by the SGPC President Gobind Singh Longowal in an executive meeting of SGPC.

Dr. Roop Singh also informed that the SGPC has also setup a 66 KV Power House Sub-Station to ensure 24 hours regular supply to Sri Harmandir Sahib complex. He further added that the SGPC was ready to bring greenery on heritage walk with floral plants if Punjab government permits it.

Sulakhan Singh Bhangali, Chief Engineer of PPCCB S. Gurinder Singh Majithia, S. Sukhminder Singh, Senior Environment Engineer S. Hardeep Singh, S.D.O S. Kamaljit Singh and Additional Manager S. Lakhbir Singh were also present on this occasion.
