Gurbani Word Of The Day: jaadav

ਜਾਦਵ (jaadav)

Meaning: noun: Yadavas, the descendants of Yadu clan that Sri Krishna belonged to.

Quote:

dur-baasaa siu karat ṭhagauree   jaadav e phal paae.
Playing deception with the sage Durvasa, the Yadavas received these rewards (that their entire clan became extinct). -Bhagat Namdev, Guru Granth Sahib, 693

Message: Cleverness, cunning, power, and relations with the mighty and powerful should not encourage one to slight and provoke others. One never knows when the situation can go drastically wrong, boomerang and bring disaster in its wake.

Legends hold many examples of such happenings. The youth from the clan of Sri Krishna played mischief with an ancient sage known for his short temper. It is said that he cursed the whole Yadava clan, of Shri Krishna, to perish.

One should always remain humble and in awe of the Divine, in all circumstances and eventualities.

Note: Yadavas are the descendants of Yadu. They were mainly cowherds. When Sri Krishna was born, they were settled in the neighbourhood of Mathura, on the banks of river Yamuna. However, they migrated to Dwarka with Krishna.
