Gurbani Word Of The Day: bhagvaa

ਭਗਵਾ (bhagvaa)

Meaning: adjective: Saffron, red ochre; cloth dyed with red ochre or saffron (as worn by yogis).

Quote:

(O Divine!) Some wander around wearing saffron robes, but without the guidance of the true Guru, no one has found You. -Guru Nanak Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 1290

Message: Which colour to wear?
Saffron was and still is a trademark colour of yogis, sanyasis, sadhus or priests at places of worship. However, donning saffron or bhagwa alone cannot elevate us spiritually. It cannot make us saintly or virtuous.

The jewel is within us, but we are searching for it outside. The Word of the Guru will help us reveal this jewel within – the jewel of our dormant potential and divinity.

Realising our own self, we will realise the truth that: It doesn’t matter which colour we wear. What matters is the colour we reflect, the colour of love.

ਮਨ ਰੇ ਗਹਿਓ ਗੁਰ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ॥ ਕਹਾ ਭਇਓ ਜਉ ਮੂਡੁ ਮੁਡਾਇਓ   ਭਗਵਉ ਕੀਨੋ ਭੇਸੁ॥
O mind! You have not accepted the Guru’s teachings. (Without accepting the teachings of the Guru) what use it is if you have shaven your head, and put on saffron robes? -Guru Tegh Bahadar, Guru Granth Sahib, 633

Etymology: Origin obscure.
