ਧਨੁ ਲੇਖਾਰੀ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਪਿਆਰੇ   ਸਾਚੁ ਲਿਖੈ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰਿ॥
ਹੇਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹਲਿਖਾਰੀਧਨਤਾ-ਜੋਗਹੈ, ਜੋਸੱਚਨੂੰਹਿਰਦੇਵਿਚਧਾਰਦਾਅਤੇਸੱਚਲਿਖਦਾਹੈ।

Message: There are many important virtues required for leading a good and fruitful life. Cherishing truth, however, is the first and foremost of them. Truthfulness is the foundation of all the virtues of humanity.

Blessed are such writers who cultivate love and have yearning for truth. The writers who live their life truthfully will become true motivators of humans. Such writers will utilise all their sensual faculties and mind’s energy to nurture and develop their intrinsic worth and potential to make life better, for themselves as well as for others.

Etymology: Perhaps from Sanskrit lekhahaarin (taking or conveying a letter on) or modification of Sanskrit/Pali lekhak (scribe) from lekh (writing).
