Bhai Rajoana Appeals SGPC President to Follow Proceedings of Mercy Petition

PATIALA, Punjab—In a letter shared via his foster sister Bibi Kamaldeep Kaur, death row convict Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana has appealed the SGPC President Gobind Singh Longowal to follow proceedings of his mercy petition. A mercy petition for Bhai Rajoana was filed by the SGPC regarding commutation of his death sentence to life imprisonment in 2012.

Taking on the SGPC, he has stated that if the SGPC remains unable unsuccessful in this concern then he will start hunger strike from March 28 onwards.

Recalling his earlier hunger strike, he has reminded the SGPC President that the then SGPC President Prof. Kirpal Singh Badungar had promised him of following the proceedings. He added that the SGPC’s actions remained limited unto news stories and it failed in forcing the Indian government take action on this petition.

“What could be worse than it that the President of India is taking so long time to process a mercy petition moved by the apex Sikh body but the appeals of a common man get processed within a year,” he wrote.

He has further said that the SGPC had moved mercy petition without his consent observing sharp wrath among Sikh masses and now if it feels that it was a mistake then the SGPC was free to withdraw this petition.
