Delhi State Assembly Asked to Pass Resolution in Favour of Distinct Sikh Identity

NEW DELHI—Manjinder Singh Sirsa, General Secretary of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee and a Delhi legislator, has appealed the Delhi State Assembly to pass a resolution recognizing Sikh community as a distinct community. Notably, the Indian constitution portrays Sikhs as a part of Hindu religion.

Manjinder Singh Sirsa told Sikh24 on January 18 that the Delhi State Assembly should recommend the Indian government to make necessary amendments in the Article 25-B of Indian Constitution so that the Sikh, Jain & Buddhist religions could be identified as distinct religions constitutionally.

He added that the Article 25 of Indian Constitution grants independence of adopting religion to the Indian citizens but its sub-section proves counterproductive to the nature of this article.

He has also appealed the Indian Parliamentarians to make arrangements to do amendment in the Article 25-B of Indian constitution.
