Veteran Akali Leader S. Manjit Singh Calcutta Passes Away

AMRITSAR SAHIB—Veteran Akali leader S. Manjit Singh Calcutta today passed away at 06:30 am following a brief illness.

Eighty years old S. Manjit Singh Calcutta was not physically sound from few days and was under medical treatment at the Kakkar Hospital in Amritsar Sahib. He is survived by his two daughters and a son Gurpreet Singh. S. Calcutta’s last rites will be held on January 18.

S. Calcutta started his political life as an activist of the All India Sikh Students Federation in the early 1950s. He later served as the president of the Federation. He later also served as the general secretary of the Shiromani Akali Dal. He also served in the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee as its president.

Other posts held by S. Manjit Singh Calcutta include National General Secretary of the Akali Dal, SGPC Honorary Secretary and Chief Secretary, Sri Amritsar (South) MLA, higher education minister for Punjab.

Panthik leaders have expressed sorrow at the passing away of S. Calcutta. Condoling his, SGPC member S. Karnail Singh Panjoli posted on Facebook that S. Calcutta had played a important role after the 1984’s holocaust when the then SGPC President S. Gurcharan Singh Tohra was put behind bars by the Indian government.
