Gurbani Word Of The Day: visrai

ਵਿਸਰੈ (visrai)

Meaning: verb: Be forgotten.

Quote:

so kiu visrai meree maai. saachaa sahib saachai naai.
O my mother/friend! How can that (true Name of the Divine) be forgotten by me while the true Master abides in His true Name (divine attributes and virtues)? -Guru Nanak Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 9

Message: The quote focusses on Guru Nanak’s loving preoccupation with the Divine over everything else around Him.  Why should he forget such a Master who is the embodiment of all virtues, truth and wisdom?

Explanation: He was enlightened enough to know that humans would thrive when they connected with the True One and spiritually wither when they forgot about Him.

As we need Him so much, how then do we remember Him at all times?

Through prayer, we come to understand that He is present in His conscious awareness. Through this consciousness, we experience His presence within us. He is present when we remember Him as we go about our daily life. He is everywhere, in everyone and in every instance that we practise His virtues.

To make a connection with Him is as simple as to remember Him. We need Him. He does not need us. He does not become greater or smaller through our collective prayer or our forgetting about Him.

He is the Giver of all the blessings we receive, of all that we have and enjoy every day. Through remembering Him we are made conscious of His presence and He comes to dwell in our hearts and our minds.

To remember Him all the time is difficult. We are distracted by life. There has to be a hunger in us to want to constantly keep Him in our thoughts. When there is this intense desire, this devotion, the mind opens to receive His grace and becomes enlightened.

By having Him in our thoughts with a sense of gratitude and love, we accept and submit to His will. Where there is contentment within His will, there is no sorrow.

Etymology: From Sanskrit vismarati (forgets) → Pali vissarati → Prakrit vissarai → Old Marwari visari (to be forgotten).
