Harmandir Sahib Clock Tower Gate To Undergo Renovation; Set to Get First Elevator and Escalators

AMRITSAR SAHIB, Punjab—Following the construction of beautiful entrance plaza and Heritage street outside Sri Harmandir Sahib by the previous Shiromani Akali Dal led Punjab government, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhik Committee has decided to refurbish sanctum sanctorum’s main entrance Clock Tower gate.

Sikh24 has learnt that the Clock Tower entrance’s ceiling will be given a modernized appearance with the help of stucco. Pillars of this entrance gate will be resized and special lighting arrangements will be made inside and outside of these pillars. In addition, the main dome on the entrance will be coloured in gold.

It has also come to fore that the SGPC is planning to install an elevator inside of the main entrance gate to allow easier access to physically challenged devotees. Escalators will also be installed from the way leading to the shrine complex through the Akal Takht side.

On being contacted by Sikh24, SGPC’s Chief Secretary Dr. Roop Singh said that the SGPC has allotted volunteer service of this project to Baba Kashmir Singh Bhurewale and the work will be formally commenced on November 28. “The lifts will open on both sides and also connect the Central Sikh Museum on the upper floor. The present stairs leading to the museum will be closed and the new staircase will be constructed from the periphery side,” he added.

It is pertinent to note here that there are five gateways to the holiest Sikh shrine Sri Harmandir Sahib namely Ghanta Ghar Deori, Langar Deori, Manji Sahib Deori, Atta Mandi Deori and Khazana Deori around the complex allowing access to the periphery. The main gateway, Ghanta Ghar Deori, is the most popular entry point among devotees. However, a flight of steps in the interior facade of the gateway causes inconvenience to those with movement disability or those in the wheel chair.
