High Court Reserves Verdict on Petition Seeking Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana’s Release

CHANDIGARH, Punjab—On November 2, the Punjab and Haryana High Court bench headed by Justice R.K. Jain conducted hearing on the petition moved by Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana’s foster sister Bibi Kamaldeep Kaur seeking release of Bhai Rajoana’s release. The Court recorded the contentions of petitioner’s lawyer in favour of Bhai Rajoana’s release and kept its decision reserved.

Sikh24 has learnt that the defense lawyer contended before the Court that political Sikh prisoner Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana has spent 21 years and 10 months in jail which was more than twice the tenure of life imprisonment.

Citing the mercy petition moved by the SGPC before President of India seeking commutation of Bhai Rajoana’s death sentence, the petitioner’s lawyer contended that the delay in decision on mercy petition by the President of India was extending Bhai Rajoana imprisonment.

Notably, death row convict Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana is currently being confined in the Central Jail of Patiala.  He had several times appealed the President of India to take decision on the mercy petition moved by the SGPC but there has been no response from the President in this concern. The SGPC had moved this mercy petition before the President of India in March 2012 when the Court had ordered to execute Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana on March 31, 2012.

  1. Indians have no concept of human rights. If they had people like sajjan kumar etc would have been behind bars for long time instead the Indian Govt has spent over 20 crore rupees protecting him while the victims of genocide got 5 lakh go figure.

  2. Release him for gesture of good will you can’t imprison him forever – yet people like Jagdish Tytler AND Sajjan Kumar Walk free.
