Gurbani Word Of The Day: ujaaranǧ

ਉਜਾਰੰ (ujaaranǧ)

Meaning: noun: Light, illumination.

Quote:
ਅੰਧਕਾਰ ਕੋਟਿ ਸੂਰ ਉਜਾਰੰ॥ ਬਿਨਵੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਦਯਾਰੰ॥
aňdhkaar koṭ soor ujaaranǧ. binvaňt naanak hari gur dyaaranǧ.

Nanak says: the light of millions of suns illuminates the pitch darkness when the Divine Guru becomes merciful. -Guru Arjan Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 1359

Message: When the Guru is merciful

Do we ever realise if our inner beings are dark or even slightly illuminated? How can we thrive in this life?

If we do not rein in our egoistic minds, we shall never have inner happiness or contentment.

The more we pursue our selfish ways the more we will slip down the slope of arrogance and material attachments.

The mystery of turning ignorance into wisdom, weakness into strength and vice into virtue lies in seeking the grace and wisdom of the Divine.

We can only become better when with humility we acknowledge a higher power. This act will prevent us from rolling down the slope of egoism and limitless attachments.

Etymology: From Sanskrit ujjvaalak/ujjvaar (bright) → Sindhi ujaaro (bright, light), Old Awadhi ujaaraa (light).
