CHANDIGARH, Punjab—Shiromani Akali Dal President Sukhbir Badal has written a letter to the Office of Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways, seeking installation of sign boards in Punjabi script on National Highways in Punjab.  Road Transport & Highways office is managed by Nitin Gadkari.

In his letter, Sukhbir expressed concern over ignorance of Punjabi language in sign boards installed on National Highways in Punjab.

Sukhbir Badal has further written in the letter that the step-motherly treatment of Union Ministry towards Punjabi has hurt the sentiments of Punjab masses.

“We don’t oppose any language but the inscribing of Punjabi language with high priority on sign boards will definitely prove beneficial even for illiterate Punjabi people,” he wrote.

Recently, after actions of Pandit Rao Dharennavar, a Karnatka based author who currently teaches at Government College in Chandigarh, the demand for signs in Punjabi language has gained public attention.  Recently, Mr. Dharennavar posted pictures of signs from major highways on social media where Hindi was erased.  He further posted that in various places across Punjab, signs are only available in Hindi.

Since then, Sikh activists have been posting about growing influence of Hindutva in Punjab since the election of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

  1. Sukhbir Badal is a two faced good for nothing – Yes he forgot all this when they were the ruling parties. They should go and join the hindu BJP masters and leave Punjab altogether.

  2. Badals are good at crying crocodile tears, otherwise they are good for nothing. There demise is evident. Punjabi people are now more aware of their issues and they know that Badal’s relationship with BJP and RSS are detrimental to Punjab’s interests, especially those of the Sikhs. Badals have encouraged the ultra rightwing Hindutva forces in Punjab for the interests of his own family and he will pay dearly for that.

  3. Were Badels sleeping when they in were in charge, why didn’t they do anything when Punjabi language was and is being downgrade throughout Punjab – here’s the answer they were too busy screwing Punjab out of her wealth. We don’t need leaders like them.
