483rd Anniversary of Guru Ram Das Ji – Confusion Over exact date

AMRITSAR SAHIB, Punjab—Sikh masses once again face confusion this year, over the exact date to celebrate the 483rd birth anniversary of fourth Sikh master, Guru Ram Das Ji.

Followers of the original Nanakshahi calendar, are adamant they will celebrate the anniversary on October 9 while the apex Sikh body, Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhik Committee, has fixed the date for October 7 to celebrate the event as per the controversially amended Nanakshahi calendar.

Sri Guru Ram Dass Ji was the fourth embodiment of Guru Nanak’s spirit, and the founder of Amritsar City. He was born on 24 September 1534 in a poor Hindu family based in Lahore, part of what is now Pakistan. His birth name was Jetha, and was raised by her grandmother at age 7.

At age 12, Bhai Jetha and his grandmother moved to Goindwal, where they met the preceding Guru, Guru Amar Das Ji. Bhai Jetha Ji accepted Guru Amar Das Ji as his life and spiritual mentor and dedicated himself to serve him with absolute devotion. The daughter of Guru Amar Dass Ji married Bhai Jetha, and he thus became part of Guru Amar Das’s family. As with the first two Gurus of Sikhism, Guru Amar Das Ji instead of choosing his own sons, chose Bhai Jetha Ji as his successor and renamed him as Ram Das or “servant or slave of god.”
