Young Sikh Murdered In New Delhi For Speaking Up Against An Aggressive Smoker

NEW DELHI, India—A Sikh youth by the name of Gurpreet Singh was murdered two days ago, in New Delhi, by a drunk smoker by the name of Rohit Krishna Mahanta, after he was objected to by the victim, for blowing smoke in his face. Gurpreet Singh was then deliberately mowed down by the smoker with his car, near the All India Institute of Medical Sciences.

Gurpreet Singh along with his accomplice Maninder Singh had gone near the AIIMS to film a documentary on pavement dwellers in the New Delhi on September 19. While the duo were dining near the Safdarjung Hospital, Rohit Krishna Mahanta came and begun smoking on their faces. The two objected but Rohit was drunk and threatened them in return.

Gurpreet and Maninder decided to leave, since they did not want to escalate the issue. However, Rohit Krishna Mahanta followed them and hit them with his car. He also went on to hit two other vehicles – an auto rickshaw and a cab.

The two youth were rushed to hospital. Gurpreet succumbed to injuries yesterday, while the other victim Maninder Singh is undergoing treatment at the hospital.

Meanwhile, Rohit Krishna Mahanta, was arrested from at the incident location and was later granted bail.

After Gurpreet’s death, police have added an IPC’s Section 304 (punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder with a maximum term of life imprisonment) to the FIR.

  1. If this is constituency then I don’t think people who call themselves lawyer should be entertained. The person smoking in public is an offence in the first place. Why is that not being included in the FIR. Young man objecting is killed rather then the one who was smoking should have been punished…

  2. Why the heck did this guy get bail – so wrong. He took a young man’s life, a man who was doing good and his excuse would be he was drunk. He needs to be put in prison for life.

  3. This is the state of Indian professionals call himself a lawyer – what disgrace should be locked up and thrown away the key.
    Condolences to the young man’s family – what a sad loss of such young life!!
