Sikhs Upset As Pakistan Shifts Guru Nanak Dev International University From Nankana Sahib

NANKANA SAHIB, Eastern Punjab, PAKISTAN—The Evacuee Trust Property Board has changed the site of the proposed Guru Nanak Dev International University from Nankana Sahib to village Muridke of District Shekhupura.

Speaking with Sikh24, Sadiq-Ul-Faruq shared that the ETPB has purchased 100 acres of land on Narowal road in Muridke for the Guru Nanak Dev International University and the Pakistan government has issued grant worth Rupees One billion on the recommendations of Higher Education Commission. He added that the Vice-Chancellor of University will be appointed in October-2017.

Meanwhile, the different student organizations in Pakistan are opposing the decision of Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB) of changing University site. The student bodies are pressurizing the Pakistan government to rollback its decision and establish university somewhere in Nankana Sahib only as Nankana Sahib was a birth place of founder of Sikhism and first Sikh master Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

Rai Faizal Mehmood, who leads the ISF from Sri Nankana Sahib, told Sikh24 that different student bodies have started a campaign against shifting of university site from Nankana Sahib to Muridke.

Sikh24 has learnt that the Pakistani Sikh masses have also strongly opposed the move and has warned the government of staging protests and sit-in-strikes if it doesn’t rollback its move of changing University site.
