Punjab & Uttar Pradesh Police Claim Arrest of Two Babbar Khalsa Activists

LUCKNOW, Uttar Pradesh—The Punjab police along with Uttar Pradesh (UP) Police’s anti-terrorist squad (ATS) have claimed of arresting two Babbar Khalsa affiliated activists from Lucknow and its adjacent district Unnao. The arrested Sikhs have been identified as Balwant Singh and Jaswant Singh alias Kala.

The arrest has came as a surprise to the local Sikhs as Balwant Singh, one of the co-accused, was serving as a Granthi in a local Gurdwara Sahib.  He had been serving at the Gurdwara since early 2017.

As per information shared by the UP Police Inspector General Aseem Arun, Balwant Singh was arrested from Bhalla Farm House on the information provided by Punjab police and later Jaswant Singh Kala from Unnao was taken into custody after his name was shared by Balwant Singh during interrogations.

Interacting with media on August 18, the DGP (Intelligence) Dinkar Gupta said that the duo arrested activists will be brought to Punjab on transit remand.

The Punjab police have claimed that Balwant Singh was engaged in commuting weapons to Jaswinder Singh alias Kala, and in turn Kala used to supply these weapons to other activists. The Police have also claimed that Balwant Singh used to offer asylum to Jaswinder Singh alias Kala and his aides whenever they used to come to his residence situated on Dasuha – Tanda road.     Jaswant Singh was earlier arrested in 2008 under sedition charges but released after being acquitted by the court.

Meanwhile, the Punjab Police said that Balwant Singh is an active member of the Babbar Khalsa.  He is a native of Nawa Sahar in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar district of Punjab.
