NEW DELHI, India—The Supreme Court of India appointed a two member supervisory committee today to scrutinize 241 cases related to the 1984’s Sikh genocide, which were closed by the Special investigation team (SIT). The committee would be comprised of two former Supreme Court judges and given three months to conclude their report.

A three member Supreme Court bench headed by Justice Dipak Misra did not disclose the names of the two former judges to be taken into the supervisory committee but said that he would add their names to the formal order. The next hearing of the case has been scheduled for November 28.

In another case pertaining to the killing of 125 Sikhs in Kanpur during the 1984 Sikh Genocide, the bench has issued a notice to the Uttar Pradesh government in another petition, filed by victims of the genocide from Kanpur, demanding a probe into the murder of over 125 people. The petitioner’s counsel Prasoon Kumar has been asked to hand over a copy of the petition to Additional Advocate General of Uttar Pradesh Mr. Aishwarya Bhati. The next hearing of the case has been scheduled for September 21.
