Meaning: noun: Sutra, thread; arrangement.

(O Creator) The whole creation is strung on Your thread. It originates from You and it is under Your command
-Guru Arjan Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 268

Message: Strings, patterns…who is behind them?

Sutra, literally, a thread or string, also means a rule or formula, or aphorism in English.

In Gurbani, it is used in its original sense: thread, which refers to the arrangement, the organized and final pieces in a jigsaw puzzle or the will of the Divine.

The whole phenomenon of the universe has emerged from one single source. The Eternal Singularity is manifested through creation and permeates in everything.

In other words, the Subtle or Unseen reveals itself in the form of the manifest or seen. The Creator is embedded within the entire creation.

Everything in the universe functions according to cosmic laws, and at the end of one’s life’s journey, everyone and everything merges back with the Creator.

Creation is infinite. Only the Creator knows its extent. Man is left to gape and marvel at it.

ਸਗਲੀ ਬਣਤ ਬਣਾਈ ਆਪੇ॥ ਆਪੇ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਾਏ ਥਾਪੇ॥
The Creator Himself has created the entire creation. He Himself acts, causes others to act, and creates everything. -GGS: 131

Etymology: From Sanskrit sutra (thread, cord), ultimately from Indo-European root syu or su (to bind or sew).
