272nd Martyrdom Anniversary of Bhai Taru Singh Celebrated

AMRITSAR SAHIB, Punjab—The 272nd martyrdom anniversary of Shaheed Bhai Taru Singh was observed with great devotion at Gurdwara Sri Manji Sahib Diwan Hall, Amritsar Sahib, on July 16. Following the culmination of Sri Akhand Path Sahib, a religious function was specially organized on this eve to pay tribute to the great martyr of Sikhism.

Shaheed Bhai Taru Singh was arrested and tortured during the reign of Zakaria Khan. He was ordered to cut his hair and adopt Islam but he refused to do so. Upon his refusal, Bhai Taru Singh’s scalp was cut away from his skull to prevent his hair from ever growing back, following which, Bhai Taru Singh had attained martyrdom after 22 days.

Following the religious celebrations, the SGPC appointed Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh addressed the sangat and siad that the martyrdom of Shaheed Bhai Taru Singh was an inspiration for the entire Sikh community. He added that Shaheed Bhai Taru Singh had laid his life while defending the Sikh faith in an unsurpassed way and that there was no comparison to the martyrdom of Shheed Bhai Taru Singh anywhere in history.

SGPC President Prof. Kirpal Singh Badungar said that the young generation of Sikh community needs to adopt Sikhism by taking inspiration from the martyrdom of Shaheed Bhai Taru Singh Ji.
