Punjab University Publishes Mistakes In New Edition of ‘Mahan Kosh’

AMRITSAR SAHIB, Punjab—A four member Investigation committee comprising of Principal Prabhjot Kaur, Dr. Chamkaur Singh, S. Amrinder Singh and Dr. Om Parkash, today submitted a report to the SGPC president, Prof. Kirpal Singh Badungar about alterations made to the Gurbani encyclopedia, Mahan Kosh. The SGPC had appointed this committee to probe reported alterations made to ‘Mahan Kosh’ (by Bhai Kaan Singh Nabha) by the Punjabi University while republishing the edition.

During a media brief, Prof. Kirpal Singh said that the investigating committee has found many mistakes in the Mahan Kosh. He said that many words and their meanings had been altered in the republished edition.

Prof. Kirpal Singh has written a letter containing the findings to Chief Minister of Punjab Captain Amarinder Singh, seeking action via a ban on the republished edition of Mahan Kosh. He has also sought strict action against the responsible officials at Punjabi University.

‘Guru Shabad Ratnakar Mahan Kosh’, known by its more popular name of Mahan Kosh, is a Punjabi language encyclopedia which was compiled by Bhai Kaan Singh Nabha over fourteen years. It was the first Punjabi encyclopedia and is considered a ground-breaking work in terms of its impact and its level of scholarship.
