CHANDIGARH, Punjab—India hits a new low as democracies across the world, including Scotland in the UK, consider a referendum as a fair way of determining the wants of the public, whilst in India, organizers are being charged with sedition.
The Punjab police have booked five activists of US based Human rights body ‘Sikhs for Justice’ under these charges. Two of the booked activists reside in India while the other three currently reside in the United States.
Sikh24 has learnt that Punjab police have booked them at the behest of Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, who also handles home affairs of the state. Captain Amarinder Singh is believed to have acted on a complaint lodged by BJP’s state unit, about hoardings and posters, erected by ‘Sikhs for Justice’ to promote the ‘Sikh Referendum 2020’ in Punjab. Â
The Police have blamed these activists of promoting ‘enmity and communal disharmony’ in the state by committing acts against the interests of national integrity. The police have further written in the FIR that such acts have disturbed and are likely to disturb tranquility in Punjab, and are further likely to cause fear, ill-will and a feeling of insecurity among members of different communities residing in the border state of Punjab.
