Punjab government to install Master Tara Singh memorial in Amritsar Sahib

AMRITSAR SAHIB, Punjab—Addressing a function commemorated to veteran Akali leader Master Tara Singh, Punjab Cabinet Minister Navjot Sidhu announced to construct a memorial dedicated to Master Tara Singh. The function was held by Punjab government to pay homage to the iconic figure of Akali movement.

Master Tara Singh was a prominent political and religious figure in the first half of the 20th century. He was instrumental in organising the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabhandak Committee. He is also considered responsible for misleading the Sikhs during the Partition of India. He later led their demand for a Sikh-majority state in Punjab by  initiating  a hunger strike in 1961 at the Golden Temple in Amritsar, promising to continue it to his death unless the then Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru agreed to his demand for such a state.

Addressing the gathering, the Cabinet minister Navjot Singh Sidhu said that the memorial would be constructed as per the wishes and at a place to be chosen by the family members of Master Tara Singh. He further said that selfless leaders like Master Tara Singh would continue to rule hearts of the people.

Extending token of appreciation towards Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh for organising this event, Navjot Sidhu said that Master Tara Singh dedicated his life to protect interests of the Sikh Panth and worked for it tirelessly. “When I see today’s Akalis in the Vidhan Sabha, I am ashamed to see their deeds, but I bow before the Akalis like Master Tara Singh,” he added.

He further said that the Punjab chief minister is committed to eradicating the menace of drugs from the sacred soil of Punjab and those indulging in the drug trade would be severely punished. He said it is his cherished desire to see Punjab prosper and make all-round progress on all fronts.

Dr. Jaspreet Kaur, grand daughter-in-law of Master Tara Singh, shared his memories and his contributions to the freedom movement, the Akali movement and the Punjabi Suba movement.

  1. What does Navjot Singh Sidhu knows about the struggles of the sikhs. He is perfect example of a stooge of rss . Before blaming Akali’s he should look at himself. He is just like a weather cock who changes parties depending which way the way the wind is blowing. What have they done for the thousands of families whose loved ones were killed in false encounters . Just for the record he should read biography of Master Tara Singh where he lamented ” He was fooled by the congress leadership that led to the betrayal of the sikh cause”.
