Gurbani Word Of The Day: meer

ਮੀਰੁ (meer)
Meaning: noun: Ameer/emeer or amir/emir; an independent ruler, commander, chieftain or head of state in some Islamic countries.

Quote:
ਕੋਟੀ ਹੂ ਪੀਰ ਵਰਜਿ ਰਹਾਏ   ਜਾ ਮੀਰੁ ਸੁਣਿਆ ਧਾਇਆ॥
koṭee hoo peer varaj rahaa-e   jaa meer suniaa dhaa-i-aa.

Millions of pirs (spiritual leaders) failed to halt him when they heard of the invasion of the ameer (the Mughul emperor Babur). -Guru Nanak Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 417

Message: Do not sleep in your past victories…be alert…

The verse is from a hymn relating to Baburs invasion of Saidpur, a Mughal-era village (currently in Islamabad, Pakistan).

Guru Nanak is believed to be present during that time. Seeing the desolate situation of the town, which used to be bustling with activity before, he reflects on the cause of this disaster.

The ruling Pathans (intoxicated with luxury and power) took no proper measures for defence against a foreign attack.

Instead, they relied on the claims of priests and spiritual leaders (the pirs) that they would be able to ward off or disable the invading forces with their prayers and charms.

The invasion brought such destruction that even the well-built palaces and temples were burnt down and the princes were cut to pieces.

Gurbani asks us to seek the true wealth of spirituality. Do not rely on false claims or wait for ‘miracles’ to happen.

Seek guidance from the Guru, apply your mind, and take appropriate action.

Etymology: From Persian meer from Arabic ameer (commander).
