1984 Holocaust: SGPC to Setup Shaheedi Gallery Near 1984 Memorial at Darbar Sahib

AMRITSAR SAHIB, Punjab—The Apex Sikh body Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhik Committee today resolved to install a portrait gallery dedicated to the martyrs of June 1984 holocaust in the basement near Sri Akal Takht Sahib. The move came in a meeting of the SGPC executive committee today.

Speaking with Sikh24 after the meeting, SGPC President Prof. Kirpal Singh Badungar said that the gallery would be set up in the basement of Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale Memorial near supreme Sikh throne Sri Akal Takht Sahib.

The 1984 memorial in memory of Shaheed Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and other martyrs of June 1984 attack on Sri Darbar Sahib was inaugurated in 2012.  While the original plan of the memorial was to educate Sikhs about the 1984 attack, it has since only been used as a Gurdwara.

“The gallery will provide details of Sikhs who were killed during the Indian army operation,” Prof. Badungar told Sikh24.  He said that the SGPC will be setting up a panel to collect names and information related to those killed during the attack.

The meeting was attended by several senior officials of the SGPC who all agreed to setting up the gallery.
