LONDON, UK—In a press note shared with Sikh24, Sikhs for Labour announced that it was honoured to that six Sikhs have been selected as candidates for the Labour Party in the upcoming election on June 8.

“That is the highest number of Sikh candidates to ever stand at General Election for any party in the United Kingdom, and it is a milestone that we at Sikhs for Labour are extremely proud to have achieved,” the press note read.

The Sikh candidates are (in order of constituency) –

Birmingham Edgbaston – Preet Kaur Gill
Hornchurch & Upminster – Rocky Gill
Kenilworth & Southam – Bally Singh
Slough – Tanmanjeet Dhesi
Telford – Kuldip Singh Sahota
Tewkesbury – Manjinder Singh Kang

Sikhs for Labour was set up in 2014 to ensure that there was strong Sikh representation on the Labour benches in Parliament, as well as to help guide policy issues for the Party. Sikhs for Labour is the official voice for Sikhs within the Labour Party, and over the last 3 years it has worked very hard to make sure that the diverse voices of the Sikh community have been heard by everyone within the Party and at all levels.

Neena Gill CBE MEP, Chair of Sikhs for Labour, said “We have been fighting for greater Sikh representation at Westminster for the last three years. In the last Parliament there was not a single Sikh MP. We’re delighted that the campaign led by Sikhs for Labour has had a successful result and that we now have potentially six MPs.”

Sikhs for Labour is currently organising campaign days to support as many of these candidates as possible, as well as campaigning for dozens of other Labour candidates who have strongly supported the Sikh community over the years.

“All of the Labour Candidates are looking for help, be it by volunteering on the campaign or donating money to help pay for leaflets and other materials. If you want to help out with the campaigns of any of the candidates standing for the Labour Party, please email [email protected] and tell us how you think you can help the campaigning. Whatever the outcome on 8th June, Sikhs for Labour will continue to work hard to ensure that Sikh community interests are always represented at all levels within the Labour Party. We welcome all of your support to make sure that we have strong Sikh representation within the next Parliament, and together we can make the next Government a Labour Government.”
