Gurbani Word Of The Day: tat

ਤਤੁ (tat)
Meaning: noun: Reality, truth, essence.

Quote:
ਮਿਠਤੁ ਨੀਵੀ ਨਾਨਕਾ   ਗੁਣ ਚੰਗਿਆਈਆ ਤਤੁ॥
miṭhat neevee naankaa   guṇ chaňgiaa-ee-aa tat.

O Nanak! Sweetness lies in humility. (This humility is) the essence of all virtues and goodness. – Guru Nanak Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 470

Message: Being tall, mighty and good looking or having many possessions or a good name, does not necessarily make us virtuous and good humans.

What matters are, our thoughts and actions or deeds: thinking high and doing good deeds but with modesty. Sometimes our own egoism becomes an obstacle to our work and success.

Hence the Guru says: beauty of life lies in being humble. Humility is the essence of all merits. But humility needs to be sincere and not contrived.

Etymology: From Sanskrit tattva (real state) → Pali → Prakrit tatt (reality, truth) → Sinhalese tatu (fact; state, disposition).

Summary of the Week:
We are asked to worship and pray before the Almighty. We do this in various ways, having various wishes in our hearts. Some of us do it to fulfill our worldly needs and others for some other longings.

What is the ultimate purpose of the Divine praise or worship?

It is to enshrine the Divine virtues and attributes in our mind and heart and live by them. True worship is performed when true values representing the Master, are developed in life. To do so is a supreme action or deed in spiritual terms.

Life without the love and longing for truth, wisdom, inner beauty and goodness is incomplete and unfulfilled.

Benefit from the company of Gurbani-oriented people and let the beauty of the Eternal shine through your whole being.

ਸਾਚਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਭਾਈ   ਏਹਾ ਕਰਣੀ ਸਾਰ॥
O brother! This is the most excellent deed to be done that may the eternal Master dwell in your mind. – Guru Arjan Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 608
