Gurbani Word Of The Day: karṇee

ਕਰਣੀ (karṇee)
Meaning: noun: Deed, action.

Quote:
ਸਤੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਦਇਆ ਕਮਾਵੈ   ਏਹ ਕਰਣੀ ਸਾਰ॥
sat saňtokh da-i-aa kamaavai   eh karṇee saar.

This is a supreme deed to be done: that one should practise true conduct, contentment and kindness. – Guru Arjan Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 51

Message: Gurbani often tells us to revere the Guru’s teachings, abandon vices, and gather the wealth of divinity.

This is essential because we are entangled in excessive enticements of the world. Our mind is intoxicated with lust, wrath and vanity, etc.

These vices create darkness in the mind and bring about pain. Then the question arises: how do we expel this darkness and pain? What are the actions or deeds which can help us banish them from our mind?

The answer given to us is: one needs to imbibe and practise truth, contentment, compassion and humility. This is the worthiest conduct of all. By doing so, we can overcome our vicious passions and banish our sorrow and suffering and thus experience spiritual peace.

The ideals which have lighted my way and time after time have given me new courage to face life cheerfully have been Kindness, Beauty, and Truth. –Albert Einstein, 1879-1955

Etymology: From Sanskrit karaṇeeya (to be done) → Pali karaṇeeya (duty, business) → Prakrit karaṇeea → Sindhi karṇee and Punjabi karnee (work, act).
