Canadian Minister Harjit Singh Sajjan pays visit to Bhagat Puran Singh Pingalwara

AMRITSAR SAHIB, Punjab—After paying obeisance at the central Sikh shrine Sri Harmandir Sahib on April 20, Canadian Defence S. Harjit Singh Sajjan paid visit to the ‘Pingalwara’ founded by Bhagat Puran Singh. He met the children living and studying there.

Interacting with children at Bhagat Puran Singh Adarsh School, S. Harjit Singh Sajjan said that they were very lucky as they were being taught the lesson of humanity.

During his interaction with kids, some of whom called him “great” and said they wanted to be like him, he exhorted them to be great like themselves.

“Do not try and be great like me. Remember, you are already great — aim to be great like yourself,” Sajjan said.

S. Harjit Singh Sajjan also visited the ‘Masnooyi Ang Kendra’ where the damaged parts of body of patients are replaced with the artificial one.

Pingalwara Chief Dr. Inderjit Kaur honoured and thanked the Canadian Defence Minister S. Harjit Singh Sajjan on this occasion.

It is pertinent to note here that Pingalwara is a house for destitute in Amritsar of Punjab.

Pingalwara was founded informally in year 1924 by a then 19-year-old Ramji Das who later became famous as Bhagat Puran Singh.

Pingalwara is officially registered as All India Pingalwara Charitable Society under the Act 1960, Reg No130. Since death of Bhagat Puran Singh in 1992, it is headed by Dr. Inderjit Kaur who is a physician by training and also runs a private maternity clinic in Sangrur, Punjab.

Currently Pingalwara has facilities for 1080 patients who are fed, housed and looked after thanks to generous support of various philanthropists. The unclaimed bodies of the deceased are donated to Government Medical College, Amritsar for research and teaching purposes.

The main branch houses the Administrative Complex, A Female ward, Children’s ward, Rehabilitation Centre, Printing Press, Dispensary, Medical Lab, Dental Centre and the Common Kitchen.
