Liquor Vendors Banned From Indian Highways

NEW DELHI, India—The Supreme Court’s direction to shut liquor vends from the national and state highways has come into force today. Due to the rising toll of road accidents, the Apex Court had passed a direction on December 15 to the Union and state governments to lift liquor vends from the national and state highways.

Although the Court had earlier specified that no liquor vends could be opened around a circumference of 500 metres of national and state highways, it has now relaxed the perimeter rule in less populated areas.

According to the new direction issued by the Chief Justice JS Khehar led Supreme Court’s bench, the liquor vends could be opened at a distance of 220 metres from the national and state highways. But the court has restricted this relaxation only to the areas where adjacent towns or villages have population less than 20,000.
