Punjab police arrests man for sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib at Dera Bassi

DERA BASSI, Punjab—The Punjab police have arrested a 28 years old man for desecrating a Holy Scripture of Sri Guru Granth Sahib at Gurdwara Sahib in the Devi Nagar locality of Dera Bassi. The accused has been identified as Surjit Singh who is said to be mentally upset.

Interacting with the media, the Superintendent of Police Teja Singh told the media that the accused Surjit Singh has confessed his crime. He added that Surjit Singh was upset after the death of his sister three months ago and was also undergoing medical treatment.

Holy Scripture of Sri Guru Granth Sahib in the Gurdwara Sahib of Dera Bassi was found desecrated in the morning of March 5. Around 50 sacred ‘Angs’ of Sri Guru Granth Sahib were found desecrated by the appointed ‘Granthi’ (Priest) in the morning of March 5.

The Police has registered an FIR (First Information Report) against the accused under Section 295 (injuring or defiling place of worship with intent to insult the religion of any class) and 380 (theft in dwelling house, etc.) of Indian Penal Code.

SP Teja Singh told the media said Surjit came to the Gurdwara Sahib at 6am, tore around 50 pages of the holy book and left. No one was present in the Gurdwara Sahib when the incident took place.

Meanwhile, the senior Sikh activist Jathedar Narinder Singh Khusropur has expressed concern over the rise in sacrilege incidents in last few days. He has expressed suspicion over involvement of Indian agencies to hurt Sikh sentiments.
